Chopper Reeds (Scott Towers to his mum) has been adding smoky saxophone licks to the mystic, musical brew of Fat Freddy’s Drop since early 2007. When he’s not deep in the beat lab with the rest of The Drop – or adding his secret spice to other respected NZ artists such as Opensouls, The Tornadoes & Tyra Hammond, Sola Rosa and Hollie Smith – Chopper spends his time playing with his son, digging for records and perfecting his gnocchi recipe, as well as releasing the new Fat Freddy’s Drop album, Dr Boondigga & The Big BW and preparing for upcoming shows in Melbourne [16th Oct] and Sydney [17th].
Floating Points / Love Me Like This
Yeah, I know, this is almost played out. Almost. But come on, it’s just pure dance floor gold. Great bass line, great vocal hook. Hope there’s more edits on the way from this guy. Please?
Electric Wire Hustle / Perception
One of the new generation of New Zealand acts who have really been stepping up their game and making people take notice internationally. Their productions fuse psychedelic soul and classic hip hop, topped of with the sublime voice of Mara TK.
Fela Kuti / FeFe Na Efe (White Days 01 Edit)
Perhaps this is a little less than legit, so I’ll encourage you to track down the original as well. Can’t go wrong with classic Afro-beat by Fela given a little four on the floor tickle. Vinyl only, but ain’t it time you got a turntable?
Dam Funk / Galactic Fun
Hot damn, the title sums this up perfectly. The new King of Boogie delivers pure summer fun with a real organic edge – which is no mean feat given he’s using some pretty rude boy sounds.
Budos Band / Budos Rising
Horn heavy Afro-soul from Staten Island. This is a few years old and the band have been around for a while now, but this bridges retro soul and African jazz with crunchy hip hop drums.
Jackie Mittoo / Disco Jack
Mittoo’s tracks are like listening to The Meters on valium. In other words, the perfect blend of soul, funk and dub, especially when paired up with King Tubby.
Arthur Verocai / Na Boca Do Sol
Classic. Brazilian. Genius. ‘Nuff said.
Roberta Flack / Ballad Of The Sad Young Men
Off her debut album, this is a mind-blowing performance. She’s got a beautiful voice, an all-star band behind her (including Ron Carter on bass) and, despite it being her first time in a studio, it makes you feel like she’s singing straight to you.
