UK rapper MC Trip, aka Alex Child, has a new album out — Shortcuts — which has been described as a ‘kaleidoscopic expedition through a litany of contradictions, the joy and pain, the excitement and boredom of a life lived in the city’.
Bright Eyes / No One Would Riot For Less
It’s topical yet subtle. His delivery has a vulnerable, pleading feel to it. I love it. The guy’s lyrics are so poignant and poetic. Its hard to pick a favourite Bright Eyes song, but this one gives me goosebumps every time I listen to it. He’s like today’s Bob Dylan.
The Wombats / Moving To New York
I swear the lead singer is a closet rapper. He flows so nicely and his choice of words and settings always paints a smart picture whilst also making you rock out. Straight-out balls on the table brilliant punk-pop.
Ghost Face Killah / Run
The last of the great Hip Hop records. In New York at the time, police were going into known drug haunts and shooting anyone out on the street after curfew. The song is about seeing the police and running because they won’t stop and search you – they’ll just open fire. It’s an intense listen, but if you can’t nod your head to this, you must be deaf. Jadakiss features on the second verse and delivers the best 16 bar rap ever, in my opinion. Anthem.
Dean Martin / You’re Nobody Until Somebody Loves You
My Mum would play and sing this all day. It makes me flashback every time I hear it. His voice was awesome, but he was always in Frank’s shadow, I felt. It’s a great piece of crooner-ism, though, and is also featured on my favourite film, Swingers.
Yael Naim / New Soul
Perfect bit of Summer folk-pop, with key changes that make you melt. Her pronunciation is awesome, too. I was obsessed with this song for yonks – and the video with them all floating around on that raft, strumming ukuleles, smashed it. Its brilliance lies in its simplicity.
Lethal Bizzle / POW!
This song is like a herd of stampeding buffalos. It’s testament to the British music scene because it defies genre. Just a thumping beat and a bunch of angry MCs. It got banned in clubs for a while. That’s my kind of tune.
Coldplay / Fix You
I love Coldplay. Yes, naming his daughter Apple was toe-curlingly cringey, but this song, written for Gywenth’s dying Dad, is a work of genius. Any song with a story behind it gives it extra fuel for me. The production is so layered, the words are beautiful. The whole thing is a masterpiece.
Ida Maria / I Like You So Much Better When You’re Naked
Her voice is something else, the tag line is genius, the drums are banging, and it’s not played enough! The verses are as catchy as the hook, and that’s no easy feat. She’s husky as hell – apparently she was born as a man. If that’s what it takes to write songs as good as that, I’ll have a sex change.
