The Marches debut album, 4 a.m. is the new midnight, is a blend of electro and Motown, with heavy doses of indie dance thrown in for good measure. The band are in the studio right now working on their second album but will be performing a live full set on a Nov 24th podcast for Radio Hotbodies.
The Beatles / You Know My Name Look Up the Number
Preempting the next sentence, I know what is about to be stated will sound ridiculous because hip-hop has sampled from even pre-60s eras. But the first six seconds of this song is possibly the first hip-hop beat. It is the first time a beat actually sounds like a sampled hip-hop beat before the concept existed. And I hate to give the Beatles anymore credit, because they have so much already. If I’m not wrong, you heard it from me first.
Grizzly Bear / While You Wait for the Others
I seem to increasingly like, if mic’d well, live studio performances of bands over their albums. More is on the line at every given moment. This version performed live on KCRW is particularly amazing. Especially with a band this good, the studiofide, multi-tracking, methodical and deliberate recording process can sometimes do them a disservice.
Bauhaus / Bella Lagosi’s Dead
Being faithful to my previously stated pension of live-in-studio versions of songs, this one was recorded as such for this David Bowie vampire film. It is a grander version than its sibling, with its almost two minute introduction of screaming crow reverberation, and subsequent commencement of descending out-of-tune guitars. It is completely sinister.
Tom Brosseau / Brass Ring Blues
The one time I witnessed Tom Brosseau’s live solo acoustic performance, his absolute purity immediately halted and enthralled the small forty-person crowd. When I met him afterward, it was apparent that this extremely calm and gentle person was of some other time. I don’t believe the album that Brass Ring Blues is from strikes as much awe as that performance, but when he sings ‘Brass ring … it’s the only thing … that I want … in this world … anymore’, one unfortunately and completely understands.
Jimmy Scott / Heaven [as e-mail corresponded between Richard Conti and Chris Karman]
RC: You should check out these two artists. 1..Jimmy Scott 2.The Seeds
CK: The Seeds, the 60’s garage rock band?
RC: Yes. You know about them?
CK: Yeah, their singer died a week or 2 ago, they’re good.
RC: You only know that ‘cause I just told you.
CK: I only know what cause you told me? That he died? I read it online, you never told me that.
RC: You only know that they’re good ‘cause I just told you.
CK: That doesn’t make sense.
Elvis Costello / Veronica [as e-mail corresponded by RC and CK]
RC: Do you have “Veronica” by Elvis Costello?
CK: No
RC: What album is that?
CK: Spike maybe, I’m not that familiar with his late 80’s albums.
RC: Nor is he with your late 80’s.
CK: Well, he’s missing out.
Heard on Old School Radio and researched on You Tube
A bunch of things I’ve discovered from having everything except the radio broken in my car:
Prokofiev – Symphony #1 – very interesting chord changes here and there, I want to analyze the score.
Wham! – “Everything She Wants” – as infectious as Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean”.
Redbone – “Come and Get Your Love” – drummers! Have you heard the beat during the chorus? Can’t tell if with double bass drum or what. So tight and dry.
Bobby Caldwell – “What You Won’t Do for Love” – amazing groove.
Vincent Gallo / Yes I’m Lonely
Tape loops swoon with tastefully clean electric guitar notes and Gallo’s voice, whose care and vibrato is reminiscent of someone’s parents’ time, not ours. Yes I’m Lonely is one of the best songs to ever grace my ears.
