Thao and the Get Down Stay Down (Adam Thompson on bass, keys and additional guitar, and Willis Thompson on drums and percussion) return with the follow up to their critically lauded album, We Brave Bee Stings and All, the best-selling record of 2008 for Kill Rock Stars. With super-producer and friend Tucker Martine (The Decemberists, Bill Frisell, Spoon) again at the helm, Know Better Learn Faster captures the band as their more mature, tastefully raucous, subdued and musically adventurous selves. The new batch of songs spans all genres and influences, all the while staying faithful to their distinct style and enamoring exuberance of their renowned live shows.
The Avett Brothers / Will Your Return
So catchy, forlorn, provocative and rakishly charming. It reminds me of touring. I love the cutting sincerity and the charisma of the Avett Brothers. And, totally unrelated, they are the nicest band in the world. Seriously. Ask anyone.
Karen Dalton / Just A Little Bit of Rain
Her voice and her guitar playing are devastating. Really, it’s like getting drunk by yourself. Kind of devastating.
Orchestra Baobob / Nijaay
Their interweaving melodies and guitar and vocal tones are always compelling and beautiful. Willis (our drummer) really likes them, too. One day on tour, we will form a fan club.
OutKast / Ms. Jackson
I loved it in high school and I love it still. It’s so sad and he sounds like he is a good dad. Also, it is brilliantly catchy.
The Byrds / You Ain’t Going Nowhere
One of my favorite country songs ever.
The Magnolia Electric Co. / Just Be Simple
I love songs about fucking up, regret and resignation. My favorite line is ‘everything you hated me for/honey there was so much more/I just didn’t get busted’.
The Clash / Hateful
I listened to this song every morning for weeks upon weeks while I was writing our new record. I love the energy and the maintenance of the melody considering all that energy.
Andres Landero / Lolita la Cumbiambera
I first heard Landero in the car on Joe Strummer’s BBC radio show, but couldn’t recall any useful information to find him again. The memory of the melody, the rhythm, his voice and his accordion motivated me to do more online research than I ever did in college.
