Boasting members of Serena Maneesh, Harry’s Gym and Danielson, revolving around frontman and songwriter Frode Stromstad — with the album’s supporting cast including Sufjan Stephens and Gary Olsen of Lady Bug Transistor — I Was A King are a misty eyed pop-gaze of West Coast harmonies and ringing Rickenbacker. They have just released a new single — Norman Bleik — through Sonic Cathedral.
Flaming Lips / Slow Nerve Action
The last song out on one of my favorite Flaming Lips albums, Transmissions From The Satellite Heart. I think Flaming Lips are responsible for creating the coolest drum sound ever.
Licorice Roots / Pixilated Pixie
There are so many great tunes to pick from the Licorice Roots records, but I think this must be one of the most catchy songs. Simple and straight forward drumming, supercatchy distorted organs, a brilliant vocal melody. This one has been stuck in my head for months now.
Danielson / Ship The Majestic Suffix
I can’t wait to hear what Daniel comes up with for his next album, but until then, I still play the latest one, Ships, a lot. I was so excited when got to work with Daniel on the IWAK album. He is one of the most inspiring people to be around, and I love his songwriting.
The Low Anthem / Champion Angel
I heard this band for the first time at the Great Escape festival this year, and they really blew me away. I bought their new album as soon as I got back home, and have been dancing to this one ever since. Hope I get to see a full show with them soon.
Guided By Voices / Weedking
Guided By Voices taught me the greatness of not repeating things and to keep things short. They have giving me so many moments of frustration (and pleasures) having to go back and hear same tracks over and over again, because of one brilliant hook only being played once.
The Beatles / Rain
My favourite Beatles song, and one of Ringo Starrs finest moments behind the drums. Everything about it is great!
Strapping Fieldhands / In The Pineys
The band from Philadelphia, came out of nowhere from me, and I instantly fell in love with their music. It is kind of the best from many worlds. Folk, Psychedelia, Garage rock. The In the Pineys EP is a great place to start If new to the band and curious.
The Wave Pictures / Now You’re Pregnant
Think this was the first single they did after being signed to Moshi Moshi. It has a some sort of a classic/timeless feeling, that I think is quite rare to find these days.
