James Ford, Simian Mobile Disco

simian mobile disco

Back in the late 90s, James Ford and Jas Shaw were studying biology at and philosophy respectively at Manchester University, while crafting strange electronic music in the spare room of their shared house. Fellow student Simon Lord, a folk-influenced singer-songwriter, caught wind of the duo’s sonic experiments, and along with bass player Alex MacNaughten they formed the band Simian. In order to sate their love of electronic party music, James and Jas booked themselves DJ dates while touring with Simian. They’d finish a gig and then run off to play electro records to small, sweaty rooms full of people who often seemed to be having lots more fun than the audiences at their gigs. As a pisstake, they called themselves Simian Mobile Disco.

Fuck Buttons / Flight of the Feathered Serpent
Lovely, noisy, messy, dreamy, and it’s got a great name.

Retrograde / Zoid
The Retrograde album is going to be really good. This covers Droid by Automat, but don’t let that stop you from dancing.

Joakim / King Kong is Dead
Off the most recent Joakim record, which is wonderfully not danceable. One of the best and underrated producers in France, or anywhere for that matter.

Robert Wyatt / Shipbuilding
If anyone else had a crack at this, I bet it would come over cloyingly sentimental, which this isn’t.

Laurie Anderson / O Superman
In a parallel universe, where everything is alright, this would make it to number two in the pop charts and make everyone feel like we shouldn’t give up on pop music because it can be great.

R Kelly / Ignition
We have Dickens and Shakespeare, and the Americans have R Kelly. Somehow I’m just a little bit jealous.

Vangelis / Love Scene From Blade Runner
Best film soundtrack ever, by a mile. Not a bad film either, but it’s all about the soundtrack.

Ivor Cutlor / Egg Meat
Brings a little tear to my eye just thinking about this. You will laugh, you will cry.
