After four million albums sold worldwide, a number one and nine times platinum selling album in Australia with Get Born, four Top Ten Modern Rock and Rock hits in the US, Jet have returned to form with their third album Shaka Rock, which has spent three weeks in the Top 15 of the Australian charts since its release
Fela Kuti / Water Get No Enemy
Amazing arrangement, mean ass horns, this track bristles it’s so tight, then it knocks you down like a rhino charge. My mind was blown the first time I heard it.
Dr Alimantado / Poison Flour
This features great toasting from the Doctor and the chorus will stay in your head for a very long time. Also, watch out for some of the most house vibrating bass this side of Kingston. You may need to get the builders in for some repairs. What more do we need from an old Skool reggae track? Nothing.
Augie March / One Crowded Hour
I have loved this band since their first EPs in the late 90s. They are a timeless act who create exquisite music that manages to be so intricate yet so simple. Glenn Richards’ kaleidoscopic lyricism is by far some of the most poetic and compelling I have ever heard. There are so many amazing tunes by this band, but I picked this one because it truly is one of the most incredible pop songs I have ever heard. Absolutely thrilling.
AC/DC / Jailbreak
I can’t write about AC/DC. There is no point. It’s AC/DC’s Jailbreak. What can I say!
The Sunnyboys / Alone With You
Australian hard rock has always cast a shadow over the country thanks to the no bullshit noise of AC/DC, and sometimes bands like The Sunnyboys aren’t given mainstream recognition because of it. There’s an incredible amount of sexually charged nervous energy in this track. The middle eight comes from another world, out of nowhere, and it soars.
INXS / By My Side
Yes, the big bands of the eighties in this ilk aren’t terribly in vogue right now, but not many can touch Hutchence as a performer. They’re legends. I think his lyrics are also exceptional, and very soulful, at times. This song is one of their best. It’s warm, engrossing, and it seems intensely personal. I wish he was still around.
The Vines / Get Free
Simple. This band opened the door for a fiery resurgence of Australian music. New Australian bands that came after (us included), and even the most current Australian bands of today, are now paid some attention because of The Vines’ explosive entry onto the scene. This song was short, simple, and stood head and shoulders above anything that had happened for years in Australia. It made Australian rock and roll exciting again. People said it sounded like this, like that, whatever. It changed everything and made my heart beat a little faster.
Daft Punk / Robot Rock
This song stomps you to the ground like some ginny gangster in a Scorsese film. There are upwards of a dozen different beats and variations, all with the same evil riff.
