The fifth solo album of Malcolm Middleton (ex-Arab Strap), Waxing Gibbous, is the next defining statement in his journey, adorned with his usual blend of darkness and irony, humour and intimacy. The new opus is composed from years worth of scribbles in notebooks, which were ‘chiseled and connived into being songs’.
The Auteurs / Lenny Valentino
I must have missed this band the first time around, but since reading Luke Haines’ autobiography, I am hooked. Anyone who can write about their own life and come across so badly gets the ‘thumbs up’ from me!
Dutch Uncles / Face In
I’ve recently discovered this band from Manchester as my drummer Scott plays them all the time in the tour van. Really upbeat and energetic but with lots of tricky timings to try to get your head around, it’s the est new thing I’ve heard in ages.
Alain Goraguer / Black March
I heard this whilst watching a documentary on William Segal. When I’m an old man, I hope this song will also suit my character so fittingly.
Cyril Scott / Lotus Land
My musical ambition now is to be able to play guitar as well as C.S. plays piano. Bring it on! I am raising my bar.
Diamond Head / Am I Evil
What a riff! Ignore common sense and taste and just turn this up and feel it. I sometimes forget that it’s not what you write or what you play, but how you play it. I love this song, but it makes me drive badly.
J Dilla / Nothing Like This
A feel good song. Sounds like being in love as a teenager, as it captures desperation, confusion and joy at the same time. Or am I reading too much into it?
January / Falling In
A great band that did one great album, then one shit album, then split. It amazes me how they went bad so quickly, but I love this song. Epic guitar balladry at its best.
Richard Thompson / I Misunderstood
So did I. I don’t know what to say, a really nice song and guitar line. Makes the mood, sets the scene, and this to me is what good pop music is all about.
