As The Pinx stand facing a sold-out crowd of 1800 at the Variety Playhouse, Atlanta’s hardest-working power trio have little time to dissect how they’ve reached this moment in one short year. After proving themselves in dives and at festivals across the country and living on the road, The Pinx now find themselves collecting accolades from a certain Grammy-award winning band that chooses to remain anonymous (but is identified as any of several very large, extinct proboscidian mammals of the genus Mammut), airing live performances on television, and debuting an album that led Ben Harper to personally book them on his tour. On stage, The Pinx are known for their violent performances, opening veins, pushing limits and reassuring the crowd that Rock and Roll at its best is sexy, snarky, dark and sweet.
The Knack / Good Girls Don’t
First, yes they do. And second, The Knack were way better musicians than people gave them credit for.
MC5 / Baby Won’t Ya
If you’ve ever been turned down by a woman and then wondered, ‘what if I’d tried a little harder? Is there anything I could possibly have said to relay the urgency of my need for her at this moment? What if I’d BEEN THAT SONG BY MC5?’ Because I personally think that if life was a musical, and you burst into this song, you’d get laid. In fact, if you disagree, I will kick your face off. This song feels good, I don’t care who ya are.
Dungen / Gor Det Nu
Foreign words! I don’t know what he’s singing about, but I’ll have what he’s having. The first and most important thing about this to me is that it is both frantic and orgasmic. The drums and feedback speak volumes between the gorgeous, dreamy vocal and piano melodies. Also, call me crazy, but I love the production, which is both “medium-fi” and lush.
The Faces / (I Know) I’m Losing You
Good lord, if you didn’t know what a good band The Faces were, just do three shots with me and listen to this. You can almost forgive Rod Stewart for his 80s pop cheese, and Ron Wood is as sharp as the devil’s pointy little tail. To me, however, the true story of this song is told in terms of Ronnie Lane’s bass. It struts with a rather nasty style, a drunken, sideways grin that suggests the need to wash ones’ privates before using them again.
Looking Glass / Brandy
I used to hear this song while my brothers drove me to the pool in our Plymouth Satellite. I used to hope I’d meet Brandy at the pool. I never did.
Humble Pie / Thunderbox
From the very opening of the song, your blood starts moving a bit faster just because the groove is so infectious. But when Steve Marriot starts singing, the song starts leaving friction burns in your veins. All the ladies sing: ’she’s a Thunderbox, ya’ll!’ Simplicity + melody + power = Humble Pie.
Cheap Trick / Sick Man Of Europe
From The Latest, their, umm, latest album. This song was the first to be released from the new record and it’s the most power-packed song they’ve done in years. It’s punk, with the most insane bass tone I’ve heard on record. The lyrics are nonsense, but the first line — ‘This ain’t the new, it’s the old generation/It’s all real not a cheap imitation’ — says it all. My fist is clenching into an air punching concert hammer as I think about it.
The Duckworth Lewis Method / The Age Of Revolution
Much has been said about this album as it’s a “concept album” about playing the game of cricket. You don’t have to be a fan of the game to “get” the record, but the single is pop/rock bliss. Starting with the 193’s Little-Rascals-esque horn sample and catchy melody, the song then adds clavinet and a great bass line to become a fairly funky song. Being a combination of the singer-writers, Thomas Walsh from Pugwash and Neil Hannon of The Divine Comedy, The Duckworth Lewis Method is well worth seeking out if you dig The Beatles, E.L.O, or The Move.
