A Time For Lions is the new album from the Portland based trio Stars of Track and Field. The album was produced by John King of the Dust Brothers (Beastie Boys, Beck, Linkin Park, Carlos Santana), along with Stars of Track and Field who co-produced 5 of the 11 tracks.
TV on the Radio / Family Tree
Beautiful expansive music. The melody is engaging and the lyrics are visually compelling. Adebimpe’s got such a powerful voice, which this song features out front. Enjoy the falsetto doubles and the deep rhythmic building of the outro.
Oasis / The Turning
This band has always appealed to the snotty little inner child in me. Attitude in the drum beat, vocal, 335’s” ‘Shake your rag doll baby, before you change your mind’. Yes, they are wanks, but that’s the way it goes.
Elton John / Southern Comfort
‘Soon the pines will be falling everywhere. Village children fight each other for a share. And the 609 goes runnin’ past the creek, Deacon Lee prepares a sermon for next week’. Elton John, in his Tumble Weed Collection especially, has this way of painting a picture which jumps right into your soul. You’ve either witnessed the narrative he’s assembling, or you’d like to. The delivery is undeniable in its sincerity.
Damien Rice / Why’d You Say
An impassioned raw performance. The strings are gorgeous, and it has the vocal quality of a live demo. The last choruses punch into your chest, clutching and spreading their fingers out. We’ve all said shit we know isn’t true, but it was just at that moment.
The Yeah Yeah Yeahs / Maps
Groovy tom snare jungle beat. I love the guitar work and tones, as well. She’s got this way of vibing on her lyrics that’s both mesmerizing and immediate. She also had the coolest jacket I’ve ever seen when they performed at Red Rocks.
Radiohead / Let Down
This song will forever lull me into a bliss. Arp guitar in a different time signature is the first layer of musicality in this sweet epic, one of many Radiohead masterpieces. We all secretly wish for another OK Computer or The Bends, but we nod our heads in recognition of the course these guys are charting.
The Horrors / Sea Within a Sea
I just discovered this band, thanks to a great engineer (Angus) we’re out with, and because I’m in a bubble of my own. It’s UK rock with a great vocalist capable of 80s extravagance and post-modern minimalism all at the same time. I’m enjoying the melodies and his deep howl. Great drumming and frantic instrumentals. Very cool direction.
Flotation Toy Warning / Fire Engine On Fire, Pt. 2
I love compressed drums. They drip and groove and slice through the tones, forcing you to bounce. Jason turned me onto this band, and I’ve only got two songs, but I love them both. It’s nice to hear a band make a song over 3 and half, with some instrumentals and gadgets. Solar system space pop — reminds me of old Grandaddy.
