A native of Washington, DC, Lissy Trullie got her start playing solo acoustic shows. In 2009 her band came out of the gates running, embarking upon their first national tour as they worked towards the release of their EP in February. Self-Taught Learner garnered positive reactions from the likes of Spin, The New Yorker, Rolling Stone, Stereogum and many others.
Billy Idol / Eyes Without A Face
I don’t think I had ever actually gave this song a good listen, nor did I know I had this track until about a year ago when I had my iPod on shuffle and it came on. I kept it on repeat for an embarrassing length of time. It’s addictive. From the bass line to the 80s guitar solo, and even the spoken word rap, at the bridge. All dated-ness aside, it’s a great ballad. I still listen to it on a regular basis.
Shelby Lynne / Your Lies
I came across Shelby Lynne many years ago through a friend, who wasn’t a fan, so I stole the album from her. Unfortunately, I lost it, forgot her name, and hadn’t come across it again until last week (about eight years later). I’m a big fan of older country music, but now I’ve got to give Shelby Lynne all the credit for realizing my stupidity in disregarding contemporary country music. I love this track and the album, I Am Shelby Lynne.
Joe Cocker / You Can Leave Your Hat On
Joe Cocker is gangster and that voice is unbelievable. His version of this song makes falling for old men totally acceptable.
Ultravox / Vienna
This track’s slow pacing, simple, subtle build that never fully actualizes itself into an epic musical ballad is the sort of teasing I adore and fall for every time. The drum machine and synth combination restrain themselves in such a tasteful way, never succumbing to an all out digital assault that frequented synth heavy music in the 80s.
Harry Nilsson / Me and My Arrow
This song was written by Nilsson for an ABC animated film called The Point! in 1971 and Me and My Arrow unexpectedly became a hit single. It definitely reflects cartoonish cuteness, but regardless of its initial purpose, it such a great song. It’s a ‘repeat’ track for sure.
Todd Rundgren / Hello It’s Me
I don’t really have any explanation besides just loving this song.
Herman’s Hermits / Mrs. Brown, You’ve Got A Lovely Daughter
My father loved Herman’s Hermits, and I used to beg him to play this song over and over again. It just makes me feel great every time I put it on.
Danzig / Sistinas
This slow jam by Danzig melts my heart. I’ve never been a Danzig fanatic but this track really got me. His voice is incredible, it reminds me of male singers from the 50s and 60s that made every teen girls heart flutter and cheeks blush. Like Scott Walker, earlier in his career when he was a teen heart throb.
