Michael Palmer, We Were Promised Jetpacks

we were promised jetpacks

Boasting perhaps the greatest band name on the planet, Scottish four-piece We Were Promised Jetpacks releaesed their debut album, These Four Walls, on Pod Records [Inertia]. Standing alongside the likes of Frightened Rabbit, Glasvegas, and The Twilight Sad as leading figures in Scotland’s indie-rock renaissance, the band’s first full-length was recorded almost entirely live.

The Twilight Sad / I Became A Prostitute
This is the new single by one of the best bands around. It’s pretty perfect. We’ve been lucky enough to see this live three times recently, and each time it’s felt like that footage of the nuclear bomb going off that they love to use on TV. You know when the house gets flattened?

The Longcut / Tell You So
I’m such a huge fan of The Longcut’s debut but this might top it. This song is what they do best. It’s melodic, heartfelt and completely exhausting.

Dupec / I Can Count To Twelve
A band from Edinburgh, and really good friends of ours. They formed from the ashes of the band who gave us our first ever gig. This is the last song off their four-track demo EP that they recorded last year.

Animal Collective / People
This was on the EP that came out between Feels and Strawberry Jam and I think is actually the last Animal Collective release on Fatcat. This is one of those songs that has a really subtle build from start to finish. And it’s very repetitive. Completely great.

Lyons / Silhouette
A two-piece band from Glasgow, this song is a nice summation of what they do best: Andy on guitar playing about three guitar parts at once, perfect harmonies and loud drums. When you watch them, they’re one of those bands who make you feel stupid for not doing exactly what they do.

Endor / Seek Cover
When we moved to Glasgow for university, before our band was really a proper band, Endor were the first band we saw and loved. This really is a great song, from start to finish. Every little bit, every part, is perfect for the song. It’s not been recorded yet, but there’s a good live version of the song kicking about.

Hot Club de Paris / Extra Time Then Sudden Death
Hot Club are, like Lyons, another one of those “what are we doing?” bands. You stand watching them thinking, “this is perfect, so good, why can’t we do this?” And you feel a bit stupid for being in a band that doesn’t sound like Hot Club de Paris. This is a new song, and is much more restrained than the previous two records. They just let the song simmer away. It’s totally brilliant.

Born Ruffians / Kurt Vonnegut
We’re ending on a high. I was tempted to pick a song from the Born Ruffians EP, but went for this instead. It has such a great intro, it’s always nice when you’re not sure exactly what chord is coming next. And Vonnegut references must be encouraged. A fast-paced two minutes followed by a lovely vocal ending. A good way to finish.
