Sweden-based El Perro Del Mar, known informally as Sarah Assbring, has recently released her third full-length album, Love Is Not Pop (The Control Group) and supported Peter Bjorn and John on their North American tour.
Joy Division / New Dawn Fades
I fell into a dark Joy Division crack last Summer. Usually that’s a very good sign that I’m not feeling so good. Still, I think I managed to pick something good out of it for the first time. New Dawn Fades is one of those moments where Ian Curtis’ lyrics hurt so much, you don’t know where to turn. It’s like this slow build-up to heartbreak. The ending of this song, where he’s singing, ‘It was me waiting for me, hoping for something for more. Me seeing me this time, hoping for something else,’ breaks my heart anew every time I hear it.
Taken By Trees / Tiden Gång
I remember Victoria and I had this SMS correspondence last Winter when we were both working on our albums. She sent me the lyrics to this song and I remember sitting by my window in Paris feeling bittersweet. Then, when I finally heard it, I couldn’t hold back my tears. Every song on her album East Of Eden are like rubies that in its completeness makes it a real jewel. But this song is what brings the real heart and pain in there.
Lou Reed / Coney Island Baby
The tainted sexiness of Lou Reed, and of this particular song, is what wholly enticed me last summer to spend time in a dense, hot New York. The lyrics seemed to speak to me about what I’d been through that year. I was ‘all alone and lonely’ and I’d sold my soul. At least, that’s how I was feeling. The simple chord changes do something to me physically, too. Just as it should.
Womack & Womack / Teardrops
This song makes me remember what it was like being a kid and getting completely overtaken by pop music. It’s funny how it does the exact same thing to me today as it did then. It’s like a fugue or a merry-go-round in that it just swirls round and round and you never want it to stop.
The Durutti Column / Arpeggiator
This song is walking around in Paris to me. This one song signifies the good part of working on my album. The Durutti Column are masters. Nothing more needs to be added.
A Certain Ratio / The Thin Boys
The yearning grooviness of this song, I can’t get enough of it. I always want to play this when I’m dj-ing, but it never seems to be a good time, unfortunately.
Neil Young / Will To Love
It was Rasmus, my co-producer, who got me back into listening to Neil Young. For some reason, I had missed Chrome Dreams and it was sweet discovery. The fire cracking in the background … there’s something so tender but intense about this recording.
Sally Oldfield / Mandala
Another gem that Rasmus introduced me to. Mike Oldfield’s sister, Sally, made quite a lot of albums, but the one this track’s taken from is my favourite. Her voice is immediate to your ears and the way it works like a spinning wheel of melodic happiness makes just want to keep swirling.
