The Mary Onettes’ critically acclaimed debut was described as “the perfect mix between A-Ha and The Jesus and Mary Chain”. Their new album is entitled Islands. Imagine a Swedish equivalent of The National on a diet of speed, Planet Earth DVDs, and 80’s guitar pop singles and you’ll have a vague idea of how good this album is.

Kate Bush / Running Up That Hill
I have such a clear memory of the first time I heard this. A friend of mine made a CD with his favorite songs for me, about six years ago. This song was number one, and I immediately fell in love with Kate Bush and her music. It had such a strong impact on me and I had never before felt that I could fall in love with a song like that. With the song Cloudbusting, I almost felt the same way. That summer I was listening to Hounds Of Love all the time and somehow I have never got tired of it.

The Cure / Pictures Of You
One of my first serious girlfriends was a real hardcore Cure fan. I was not! But I was in love with her big time, so I had to fall in love with The Cure as well. And I really did. This song was one of my first favorites. Those chimes! So beautiful.

The Charlatans / The Only One I Know
When I was eighteen, my and my best friend at the time and I had a indie-club in a pizza restaurant where we played this song all the time. It was always the song we opened the evening with. And we probably played it a few times more every night. I’m not into this band, but this song is great.

Red House Painters / Grace Cathedral Park
I remember getting the Red House Painters CD from a girlfriend on a birthday long ago. This CD grew into my soul after a while. And especially this song. My youth was really a bittersweet time, and this CD sums it up really well: how I felt, and how I was thinking back then.

Beach Boys / God Only Knows
How can you not have this one as one of your favorites? Almost everyone I know thinks that this one is a perfect song. And so do I. Everytime I hear it I think. ‘Damn, I wish I had written this one!’

Prefab Sprout / Bonny
I can’t really put into words what I like with this one. But all I know is that I can’t get tired of it. The rest of the band doesn’t like Prefab the way I do, and I always wanna listen to them when we’re on tour, but it gets a lot of negative views when I’m in the Prefab mood.

The Sound / Counting The Days
I really like the simplicity in this song. This song also shows what a competent band they were. This should be a goth-indie classic!

The Sundays / Goodbye
There is some nostalgia in this one, as well. I remember that my sister borrowed this CD from a boyfriend a long time ago. They were playing it over and over for a period. And I really loved it after a while. I was into punk music at the time, but I couldn’t resist Harriet Wheelers voice. And I remember they were my favorite band for quite a while. I even had a home-made poster of Harriet that I had printed from the internet.
