London rock band, Young Guns, have a new album — Winter Kiss — out now.
Thrice / Stare At The Sun
Thrice are my all-time favourite band. They’re catchy but still super heavy when they need to be. Stare At The Sun has one of the best intros to a song ever and the whole thing has got such a good feel to it. From the bassline to the lyrics, everything fits perfectly where it should be.
The Movielife / Jamestown
This album just reminds me of barbeques in the sun. It’s got so much bounce and energy to it and also it’s got an edge to it. Sort of angry pop punk. I associate it with so many good times growing up.
New Found Glory / All Downhill From Here
I’ve seen New Found Glory so many times and this has got to be one of their best live songs. When they started their set with it at the Astoria a few years ago, you could tell it was going to be an amazing set. Again, a band with loads and loads of energy. You can’t help but have a good time listening to them.
Comeback Kid / Talk Is Cheap
I love listening to this song before I go on stage. Nothing gets me pumped like a Comeback Kid song. It’s pure energy through and through. You might catch me having a mosh by myself before I go on stage.
Set Your Goals / To Be Continued
This band write the catchiest tunes. There’s nothing like a good sing-along and this song is just that. Go see them live in a small venue and you’ll see what I mean. I saw them at the Peel in Kingston and I swear, there wasn’t one person not singing along to this song.
AC/DC / Big Gun
This song was the first track on the Last Action Hero Soundtrack, which was the first CD I owned. I had never heard such a rad song and I still think it’s rad today. It’s quite possibly my favourite AC/DC song. It’s based around one of the biggest riffs of all time.
American Nightmare / There’s A Black Hole in the Shadow of the Pru
AN/GUTG is the real deal. To this day, they are one of my favorite hardcore bands that succeeds in combining beauty with pure anger. This song, in particular, demonstrates Wes Eisold’s ability to combine articulate and poetic lyrics with pure passion and aggression. I remember the first time I heard this song: I instantly had that ‘hair raising on the back of my neck’ feeling, and it still holds pole position in my GUTG catalogue of songs.
Blink 182 / Dammit
Who doesn’t have a secret love for Blink? I know I do! They are one of the first ‘Pop Punk’ bands that I really got into. This song, in particular, was an instant favourite for me, combining adolescent humour with fast drums and guitars and a catchy as hell melody. I can remember listening to this song and thinking that I wanted to be in a band like this so much. Still a party favourite to this day.
