Yuuki Matthews is a Seattle-based freelance musician and owner of two cats. Originally from Hollywood (Burbank), California, Yuuki moved to the Northwest with his mother and brother in the mid-nineties. He recorded the songs that make up Music for Savage Tropical Imagery at home between tours, odd jobs, and major milestone events. With this record, Yuuki sought to expand upon the nostalgia of subtle sound degradation.
Xavier Cugat / Perfidia
I first heard this song while watching Wong Kar Wai’s In the Mood for Love. He has an incredible knack for pairing the right song with the right scene. Even without the scene, the song is pure romance.
Yoko Ono / Looking Over From My Hotel Window
This is a very sad song. Listening to it now, I wonder who or what she was singing about. At first I thought she might be singing about John, but this record came out years before he died.
Margo Guryan / California Shake
Something about this song makes me feel like it could be on my Playlist 50 years from now. It’s a wonder why this wasn’t a huge hit when it was first released. Margo might have been ahead of her time.
Pet Shop Boys / Being Boring
When I was a teenager, I received the limited edition Japanese version of Behaviour from my mom’s best friend, Kazue, who owns a record store in Japan. I really didn’t take to it at the time, but now all the Pet Shop Boys albums are staples in my record collection. I like this song, in particular, because it makes me think about my friends.
Jim O’Rourke / The Visitor
Is this a song or an album? I don’t know, but I’ve spent more time with it than any other song or album this year. I’m glad the world has more O’Rourke to listen to.
Bill Callahan / Eid Ma Clack Shaw
One of the grooviest, most surreal and most inspiring Bill Callahan songs. I can’t say much else. His lyrics are just the best ever.
Common & Martina Topley Bird / Everywhere
I really like Common (so no offense to him) but I wish this song didn’t have rapping on it. Martina Topley Bird’s vocal melody carries this song to another dimension. I would love to hear an entire record of hers that sounded like this.
Plaid / White’s Dream
This song is like the sound of swimming and flying at the same time. It might also be the soundtrack to me discovering some secret treasure, like a cave full of jewels.
