Allyson Baker, Dirty Ghosts

dirty ghosts

After a three year hiatus from playing together in San Francisco’s Parchman Farm, bassist Carson Binks and guitarist Allyson Baker regrouped and formed Dirty Ghosts with the addition Aesop Rock on drum programming in 2009.

Gang Gang Dance / First Communion
I heard this song playing in a store while I was on vacation and I went out and bought it the next day. I’ve probably listened to this song about 80,000 times since. The little guitar bit in the middle, that Afro beat style soloing, that’s what got me!

Chrome / New Age
What can’t I say about Chrome. This band is total perfection to me. Lately I’ve been listening to Red Exposure a lot, and this is the opening track. I love how the song builds piece by piece in the beginning with all the sounds. This song sounds as current to me as it does old. In this early 80s era of Chrome, I think they were the best they ever were, and this song has all the elements of what made them so great.

Captain Beefheart / Hot Head
I love the main riff of this song. I always found it amazing that this band could keep switching up guitar players over the course of their career and remain awesome throughout (almost!). Gary Lucas, their guitar player at the time, brought this band back to life, as far as I’m concerned. They got so good towards the end, just aggressive. I find this one of the heaviest Beefheart songs.

Edan / Rock n’ Roll
The beat of this song is total heavy psych. It always makes me think of The Kettle by Colosseum, or Blue Cheer. Edan’s got such good taste. I’m a big fan. I could listen to this song everyday.

Beyonce / Green Light
This song gets me so pumped! It’s got all the good stuff: rimshots, cowbells, fake horns and a two note bass line that’s barely in the song. And, of course, Beyonce. She’s the best. Love her.

Smif-n-Wessun / Sound Bwoy Bureill
This reminds me of living in Toronto and being in high school. These guys were just dark and heavy. That seems to be an ongoing theme in a lot of my choices. Just finding those sounds in different styles of music. My friend saw them in Toronto a few months ago and he said the crowd went so nuts when they played this song, that they played it twice in a row.

Dwarves / I’m a Living Sickness
Even though it is a cover of a Calico Wall song, the Dwarves just slay the original. Especially in the chorus, that’s the best part. Blag just goes from quiet to screaming his head off. Check out Horror Stories.

Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet / Reid’s Situation
Of all the bands that have come out of my hometown Toronto, Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet are my all-time fave. They were an amazing band that wrote really good instrumental songs and had a great sense of humor. Brian Connelly, the guitar player, is a true treasure of the North. He is hands down my favorite guitar player ever. He barely shows off his skills in this song, but the song has a melody that I absolutely love.

The African Brothers / Sakatumbe
I listen to this song constantly. And when it’s over, I play it again. You should listen to it and you’ll see why. Insanely funky African psych! Give me funky drums and a good riff that repeats through the entire song and I’m good to go.

I must confess I enjoyed listening to your playlist, so first of all, thank you. Second of all:
Question:
is this a one time thing or are there going to be regular updates but you have just been busy?
i gotta know cuz its taking up prime real estate on my bookmarks tab
and im getting really tired of typing in ‘rhyme dictionary’ into google every single time –> but i would be willing to continue doing so provided that you post more music on a somewhat regular and of course flexible basis.

ALL THE BEST health, well-being, and luck see ya later
