VV Brown is a dynamo self-starter: a songwriter and producer; a fashion maven with a retail website devoted to her personal eye for retro style in the 21st century, and a model, first signed through a chance in-flight meeting, and now represented by Next Models. Signed in 2008 to write and produce her own album, VV now lives in London in a quaint cottage with her sisters.
Bat For Lashes / Glass
When I first heard this song, I fell in love. I knew all her other music, but when I first heard this, the voice was just melting. She is one of my favourite artists. The radio station KCRW performance is just unbelievable.
Ryuichi Sakamoto / Love Theme
This song is the meaning of relaxation and beauty. His understanding of space and simplicity is so crucial and special. It’s really taught me so much about musicality on another level. I find it hard to relax, generally, and this song and composer is the only song that actually can relax me. It sends me to tears some times. It sounds like Love through melody, truly.
Little Dragon / Tendencies
This song is the bonus track taken from their second album, Machine Dreams. This song is so hypnotic and such a collage of fusion of soul, edge, Afro beat and world music. This is my favourite band at the moment and you have to check them out live. This sends me into states of hypnotism every time I hear it and the synth parts towards the end drive you nuts.
Tina Turner / Rolling on the River
This was a song that introduced me to Tina when I was young. My mum had it within her vinyl record collection. It’s raw, it’s soul and it’s rock n’ roll at its most real. I love the pain in it and the desperation. It oozes sexual tension and fire. I do the moves in the right parts. Ike’s low singing in the beginning is classic. Its Pentecostal church mixed with a naughty girl.
Imogen Heap / Hide and Seek
This is genius to me. Imogen Heap has this amazing teaching spirit in which she introduces technology and art, all translated in a unique way. I had the pleasure to meet her this year and I was so star-struck, which I never usually get. She is one of those amazing artists that inspire you so much and challenge you as an artist and a producer. I remember her in Frou Frou and bought her first record. The Vocoder accapella vocal harmonies are just breathtaking and her ability to marry lyrics with the right melody to convey connection is too much.
Lady Gaga / Poker Face
She is a melodic genius. This song is the perfect cocktail of modern culture and great melody. I only noticed how amazing this song was when I played it around the guitar. I had to stop. I just thought the song as a whole was just pop genius. Almost like a Beatles song. The production is fresh and I think she just deserves to go on and on and be a bigger and better star.
Dead Perez / Hip Hop
Now there is not much to be said about this record other than nod your head and feel. The lyrics are wicked. Every now and then as an artist you feel compromised and have to fight to keep your artistic credibility. This lyric empowers me in moments like this. This, to me, feels like real Hip Hop. The bass line is too much and he has the same mega phone as me in his video!
Blur / Song 2
I’m a Brit and this is one of my favourite bands. It’s cheeky and feels indie and slightly punk. I had the pleasure to work with Damon Albarn, which was brilliant! I love the way the drums are mixed in really hollow and compressed. The vocal is raw and honest. Graham Coxon is a bloody genius on guitar and this captures so much British in one song.
