Sydney’s Cassette Kids are the final addition to The Big O bill. On the cusp of something big, Cassette Kids have already earned a fierce reputation thanks to captivating vocalist Katrina Noorbergen. They have toured with The Presets and shared the stage with Ting Tings, New Young Pony Club, Van She and many more.
Crystal Castles / Alice Practice
This was the first track I ever heard from Crystal Castles and it blew my mind. The sounds and textures were unlike anything I’d heard before and the song had this attitude and energy that I loved immediately. As a vocalist, I loved how messed up everything sounded, and it made me want to hammer some vocals through an amp and crank up the distortion.
The Knife / Heartbeats
This is an indie dance floor classic and takes me right back to the days of when I first moved into the city and headed out to Purple Sneakers on a Friday night. She has such a unique voice, and this is a group that I would do anything to go and see live.
Band of Horses / Is There a Ghost
This band blew me away at Splendour in the Grass a couple of years ago. This guy has the best beard ever, but aside from that, this is a beautiful ambient track which tugs at the heart strings.
Simian Mobile Disco/ Audacity of Huge
These guys have to be one of the best electronic acts going around. They really push boundaries with the vocals (which are not your standard, over-used Autotune sound) and the kinds of electronic sounds they use. They have incredible attention to detail, and every time you listen to this track, you’ll notice something else poking its head back and forth in the mix. Plus, it’s just a banger of a dance song.
The Drums / Let’s Go Surfing
The ultimate summer song. It’s an incredibly catchy little surf rock ditty, and it gets stuck in my head all the time, but not like shit pop music where you want to smash your face repeatedly. It makes for some fun, happy listening!
Radiohead / Everything in its Right Place
This is my favourite Radiohead song ever. That’s all I have to say about it. It’s just simply brilliant and I know everybody harps on about Radiohead, but if you haven’t heard this song, your brain is missing a vital and profound experience.
White Rabbits / Percussion Gun
Probably my favourite new band. This track encompasses an intriguing tribal like rhythm section with guitar, piano and a passionately delivered vocal. I think they are going to be a very big deal.
Animal Collective / My Girls
Another favorite. It’s intelligent pop music that’s pushing boundaries and has that unique Animal Collective sound. The watery synths and catchy vocal melodies draw you in to the wonderfully layered and colourful world that is Animal Collective. And the rest of the record, Merriweather Post Pavillion, is also a very worthy listen.
