Hexes and Ohs

The story of this electro-pop duo begins with a pair of high school sweethearts and spans years of couple-hood and musical projects. The duo’s debut release, Goodbye Friend, Welcome Lover, reached the number two position on the Canadian campus radio charts.

Delorean / Grow
We first heard of Delorean while on tour in Spain. They were all over the Spanish music press. Then we finally heard them on the indie radio station playing in the van. Mucho bueno.

The Morning Benders / Excuses
I’ve always really wanted to hate this band. One of my ex-bosses whom I’m not so fond of obnoxiously sang their praises because her nephew had something to do with them But alas, I could deny my love for this song.

Pavement / Gold Soundz
This song is the sonic embodiment of being 16 and band practicing with my best friends in my parents’ basement. The song’s from their 1994 album, Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain. I lent the CD to a friend soon after I bought it. I never did get it back.

Telepathe / So Fine
This song mixes the sweetness of Au Revoir Simone, Le Tigre’s poise, and New Order’s analog warmth. Where has this song been all my life?

Phantogram / Mouthful Of Diamonds
It’s funny how Phantogram’s sound has morphed in my mind since I first heard them. They are deceptively simple, but then all these other subtleties creep up on you. They used to remind me of Blonde Redhead, but it’s also trip-hoppy, in a good way.

Hot Chip / Brothers
I love the lyrics in this song. At first you think they are tongue-in-cheek, and then you realize it’s not. They’re completely sincere, sweet and lovely. I also love the chariots of fire vibe.

The Black Ghosts / Anyway You Choose To Give it (Boy 8 Bit Remix)
Of the two post-Simian bands, I always preferred the Black Ghosts over Simian Mobile Disco. I’ve always loved Simon Lord’s voice and I love it more coming through the electronic sounds of the Black Ghosts.

Death Cab For Cutie / My Mirror Speaks
I have been pretty disappointed with Death Cab For Cutie’s output of late, but this song from the Open Door EP has restored my faith. It has that effortless melodic flow I love so much about their earlier albums, and a chorus that climbs and climbs.
