There’s something about the kind of potent rock and roll fury that Airbourne cranks out, all cylinders firing, that makes you want to chug a beer straight down your throat and punch the air as though it’d touched your wife inappropriately. It sounds crude, we admit. But that’s the thing about these Aussie pub rock rebels. Their music, like new album No Guts. No Glory., are perfect soundtracks for drunken debauchery, and “that’s what we’re here for, mate,” says rowdy lead guitarist and vocalist Joel O’Keeffe.
Charlie Daniels Band / The Devil Went Down To Georgia It has an awesome story and even more amazing fiddle playing. For a country song, it ROCKS!
The new Creed album, Full Circle, is the band’s first album of new material since the release of Weathered in November 2001.
Filter / Take A Picture This song came out in early 2000 and was one of many great songs off the album Title Of Record. In 2005, my close friends and I began to take annual trips throughout Florida and realized this song was being played repeatedly on our iPods. It became an anthem for this annual trip. Listening to it now reminds me of many of the great times we’ve had so far and many more great times to come.
Madina Lake recently ripped it up on the Warped Tour in the US before opening on the main stage at Reading and Leeds. Their latest single, Let’s Get Out Of Here, hit digital stores on August 3.
Muse / Stockholm Syndrome This track revitalized my love for music. It has this constant build that blows my mind. Even as it changes in dynamic from verse to chorus to verse to bridge, the entire thing builds and gets heavier and heavier throughout. The ultimate pay-off.
Formed in 2000, Northern Ireland band The Answer play old-school blues-rock, influenced heavily by 70s stalwarts AC/DC and Led Zeppelin.
AC/DC / Whole Lotta Rosie When I was eight years old, my brother played me this track in the car and I was blown away. I’d never heard guitars this loud and aggressive. Before this I was mostly listening to Dire Straits and Queen. At that age I didn’t know what Bon Scott was singing about, but I knew it was something dirty. After hearing this, I went out and got every AC/DC album I could find and I was headed down a path from which I have yet to return!
Brighton-based hard rock band Slaves To Gravity have just released their debut album, Scatter The Crow.
Stone Temple Pilots / Lounge Fly There are so many great STP songs, but this is definitely one of my favorites. The snare and kick fill at the beginning is genius. And the chorus gets me every time. I always find myself singing along at the top of my voice. I like the acoustic guitar in the middle section, as well.
Formed in Leeds in 2004, The Plight’s first practice was in the particularly rock and roll location of an abandoned office block on the outskirts of the city. The Plight began to tour the UK extensively, playing anywhere that would have them, their hard work paying off in 2006, when Leeds label Thirty Days of Night picked released their self titled MCD that summer. Since then, they have shared stages with the likes of Sick of it All, Bring me the Horizon, and a full UK tour with Gallows.
The Clash / Spanish Bombs I wore out a tape of London Calling in my art class at school. My art teacher was an old punk and had watched the video of London Calling on the side of the river. He was cool, and used to let me put The Clash on everyday. I saw Evil Dead II for the first time in his office one afternoon.
Formed in 2003, Kent band Sizen deal in heavy grooves and sledge hammer riffs. The quartet have drawn inspiration from the band’s they grew up loving – from Metallica to Soundgarden to Rage Against The Machine, as reflected in their debut album, What Do You See, which is all about ‘bringing rock music kicking and screaming into the new millennium’.
Pearl Jam / Even Flow It’s the chorus, it works so well, and it’s a great hook. It also reminds me of a time in my life where all I had to worry about was guitars and girls. Nothing’s really changed!
