Hailing from Southend, London, Hexes are a hardcore quartet who describe their sound as being ‘a cyclopean howl, as a burning torch is thrust into a drunken eye’. Indeed.
The Dillinger Escape Plan / Milk Lizard Ire Works was my album of the year when it was released. To play the way they do and then temper the super technical aural carnage with songs like this and Black Bubblegum. They are a truly inspirational band, and are superbly technical players yet fantastic songwriters too. As far as live bands go, they can pretty much take anyone touring right now as well. Ferocious.
Portsmouth’s Munroe Effect crunch heavy duty guitars and booming bass into a sound that Rock Metal Music have described as ‘progressive post-hardcore … with subtle and intricate calm moments unfolding into wide-screen heaviness that belies their single-guitarist line-up’. Ah ha. We agree.
Rival Schools / Used For Glue Scientific research has shown that if you don’t like this song, your ears are broken. This fine example of songwriting perfection sounds bigger than communist Russia and has one of the greatest guitar solos ever recorded – and they’re making a new album. Yes!
Sheffield-based melodic hardcore group, The Legacy, have a great new album — Beyond Hurt, Beyond Hell — and crackling Playlist to spruik.
Nirvana / Aneurysm An extremely important band to everyone in The Legacy, and a song we have been meaning to cover for a long time. Hopefully one night we’ll get to jam this one out on stage. I don’t know what else you can say about one of the most influential bands in the history of music.
My Secret Playlist is a music discovery website and weekly email publication. We invite our favourite bands and musicians to give us the rundown on their eight favourite songs right now. These are their words on the music that inspires them.
