The Shout Out Louds are working on a new album, titled Work, and the first single off it is called Walls. The band is have been oled up in a Seattle studio with Phil Ek (Fleet Foxes, The Shins, Modest Mouse).
Bob Dylan / She Belongs To Me Great lyrics. A different kind of love song. A portrait.
Jookabox is a ghost soul punk band from Indianapolis, IN. Originally called Grampall Jookabox, the band began as a one-man band whose live show included multi-instrument looping and lighted sweat bands. The group has recently grown to four members, and includes former members of Indy psych-pop band Everthus the Deadbeats. Themes of the paranormal, spiritual, and divine love permeate Jookabox songs. Their recordings have always covered a lot of ground in terms of genres, but usually include grimy distorted beats and sped up or slowed down vocals. Jookabox has consequently drawn comparisons to Ween, Beck, and The Godz. Jookabox’s new album, Dead Zone Boys, will be released November 3 on Asthmatic Kitty Records.
Prince / I Would Die 4 U I ought to have this song playing on a loop all day, because it makes me do everything better and faster. It’s good to be reminded of the people you would die for, and it makes you want to work hard in case you have to do it soon. This song reminds me of a hymn from church, ‘There is no greater love, no greater love, than to lay down your life for a friend’. The scene in Purple Rain where The Kid’s Dad tells his wife he would die for her is devastating.
With regard to album titles, Rewild is as apt a mission statement as Brooklyn band Amazing Baby could get. Formed out of the remnants of many a Brooklyn band, Rewild is the product of love and sustaining the loss of it, a car crash, a fourteen-piece orchestra, and the desire to make sense of – or escape — their surroundings. “We are fascinated with escapism and creating small worlds that can stand alone or be connected as stories within the context of our album,” says lead singer Will Roan. They are songs of catharsis, anthems of evolution, the marriage of feral emotionality with a deep intellectualism.
Cocteau Twins / Blue Bell Knoll This song is like Enya covering My Bloody Valentine. Actually, it sounds like that weird singing alien chick known as the Diva in the Fifth Element starring Bruce Willis and Gary Oldman. Sorry, I have a nosebleed and my Boba Fett helmet is upsetting my allergies.
Bob Dey’s Tank Engine Man is produced by the unique partnership of Mr. Bob Dey and Mr. Talent. Mr. Talent acts as a sort of surrogate musician for Mr. Dey (who doesn’t have the time or training to pursue his musical aspirations himself) by recording and performing the songs that Mr. Dey writes. Together they create an interesting blend of many influences, which coagulate into what Mr. Talent refers to as “weird rock music.”
Jack Kittel / Psycho This song has a disturbing theme, but the music and vocals are performed almost tenderly. Thus, by the time the lyrical content reaches you, it completely mows you down. Mr. Dey is always reminding me of the “Law of Contradiction” (the importance of balance and the inevitability of double standards) and this technique fits in quite well with that.
As an internationally respected artist, producer, remixer, and DJ, David Guetta’s career is reaching new peaks. When Love Takes Over, featuring the lead vocal of multi-platinum pop-R&B songstress Kelly Rowland, is taking off as a world-wide smash, posting its first national number one charting in the U.K. He is also the track producer of Black Eyed Peas’ rousing new number one single, I Gotta Feeling, in whose video clip he makes a cameo appearance. And Guetta’s upcoming fourth studio album, One Love, scheduled for August 25 release on Astralwerks, is an ambitious, ingeniously crafted album.
Black Eyed Peas / Boom Boom Pow I produced the new single I Gotta Feeling, but I gotta say, this track is the most innovative and exciting track I’ve heard in a long time.
Great Northern (Solon Bixler, Rachel Stolte) released their atmospheric and melodic debut album, Trading Twilight For Daylight in 2007. Their new album, Remind Me Where the Light Is, is the work of a more seasoned group, one that has been on the road for months, missed home, seen the world, and returned, not entirely prepared to sit still and write. The results being upbeat, guitar-driven songs, yet with the familiar layered vocals and sweeping, panoramic sound.
Simon and Garfunkel / Bridge Over Troubled Water It makes us cry every time.
Melbourne’s Winterpark will play a special Valentine’s Day single launch on Saturday 14 February at the Northcote Social Club in Melbourne. Playing tracks from their second album, Falling Men and Flying Dreams, which was released in late 2008 via MGM Distribution, Winterpark returns to the live scene following a successful east coast tour. Mixed by Casey Rice (Dirty Three/Tortoise/Grand Salvo) and mastered by Roger Siebel (!!!/Death Cab for Cutie/Modest Mouse), Falling Men and Flying Dreams takes the listener across contrasting musical landscapes that have been described by critics as ‘vast airy landscapes’, ‘tart, affectionate tunes’, and ’swirling nu-gaze’.
Ulrich Schnauss / Stars I love this guy’s production and aesthetic. He creates churning layered soundscapes, with soft but driving electronic beats. It’s sort of a bit like My Bloody Valentine meets Pink Floyd in Berlin, which has got to be a good thing.
