The Lovehammers feature ex-LA GUNS front man Marty Casey. Their new record, Heavy Crown, was released recently.

Ladyhawke / My Delirium
I love this tune because Ladyhawke so confidently sings about being thrown through the wringer. I love the driving rhythm and the tone of the guitars. This songs just kicks my ass!

Amos Memon, Fanfarlo

fanfarlo

There is no doubt that all of Fanfarlo are clever, bookish coves, but when they come together to make music, they function on a gut level. For a band that comes from all over, there is a restless, furtive artistry to their music, as reflected on their highly acclaimed debut album, Reservoir. Of this Secret Playlist, band member Amos says: ‘
I recently compiled a mix tape for my car and all these songs were on it. I didn’t realise that many were from soundtracks, but they work just as well in a car, or more likely sitting in traffic on the North Circular Road en route to band practice, as they do on the big screen. Enjoy’.

Elliott Smith / No Name #1
One thing I like about Elliott’s songs is that they play like short films in my mind. He makes his characters very real and easy to fit into the context of a movie. It would have been interesting to hear his soundtrack to Thumbsucker, but I’ll always have my favourites to fall back on.

still flyin

San Francisco’s favourite party band, Still Flyin’s debut album, Never Gonna Touch The Ground, was mixed in Melbourne by Haima Marriott with help from Gus Franklin and Isobel Knowles. The first single was Good Thing It’s a Ghost Town Around Here; an anthemic ode to workplace hangovers. Besides their well-toked reggae-party default setting, Still Flyin’ is equally adept at the penetrating slo-jams (Following the Itinerary/Haunted Houses), high energy thunder-jams (Ghost Town, Dead Memory Man), and the catchy world-pop of second single The Hott Chord is Struck.

Queen / Another One Bites The Dust
I recently threw a party at my house that was announced as a ‘dance contest’. Everyone had to put a few dollars in a bucket and the rules were that, as soon as the music started, you had to start dancing and if you ever stopped you were disqualified. We even had beer runners and bathroom escorts. My Playlist started and it was Another One Bites The Dust. The next song song was Another One Bites The Dust. Over and over. People danced to this jam from literally 11pm to 4:30am and it only stopped because the cops came and shut it down. The song is permanently ingrained in my soul now. I’m tempted to list this eight times in a row.

Team Genius

team genius

Brooklyn-based collective, Team Genius, are just that: a team of genius’. Musical, of course. They create text-book pop, all hooks and precision, with just the faintest whisper of soulfulness underlining the triumphant pop melodies. True to form they compiled their Secret Playlist as a collective. Ain’t cohesion a grand thang.

Queen / Don’t Stop Me Now [Drew]
It’s just a great pop tune, fearlessly corny with pure honesty. It captures that amazing vibe that Queen had that no other group ever figured out: really intelligent sense of humor, great songwriting chops and a grandiose energy. It’s impossible not to enjoy this song on some level.
