Ethan Ward, E-603

ethan ward e-603

Taking the gauntlet laid down by Girl Talk and sharpening it even further, the response to Ethan Ward’s (aka E-603) Torn Up has been remarkable: overnight, three tracks from the record were lodged in the Hype Machine’s top five list. Torn Up contains over 280 samples from the past six decades, and also includes some music composed by Ward himself. Live, Ward masterfully mixes about 500 samples together into one party anthem entirely on the spot.

The Misfits / Hybrid Moments
I listen to this song at least once a day. The song is the perfect length and rocks my fucking brain the whole way. Danzig’s lyrics and voice are nothing but amazing. The first time I heard it, I knew I would never be the same again.

the jaguar club

Brooklyn’s The Jaguar Club have been playing around the city for a couple of years and have just finished up their debut album, which they recorded with Kevin McMahon (The Walkmen, Die Die Die, Frightened Rabbit) at Marcata Recordings. Their debut is full of perfectly crafted New Wave pop songs, with Will Popadic’s vocals soaring above it all.

Neil Young & Crazy Horse / Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere
Picking one Neil Young song to talk about is an impossible task for me. This song is a great one to pull out when people complain that Neil is all about one note solos that last ten minutes. I also love the solos, and there are plenty of those later on this album, but the title track is a great little three minute country rock song. Everyone can relate to a little homesickness.

Ulrich Schnauss / On My Own
I have it on right now, and it’s new to me, and it’s brilliant.

Bell X1

bell x1

Bell X1’s US debut Flock earned the band incredible reviews earlier this year and the Irish trio are now primed to take on America with their most ambitious album to date. Landing somewhere a ‘little bit electronic, a little bit Bacharach and a little bit New Orleans Funeral March’, Blue Lights On The Runway, is a coherent and intriguing record from start to finish. Recalling Eno-era Talking Heads, Sigur Ros, and XTC on jagged, the album contains the vintage synth-laden Broken Umbrella, the syncopated How Your Heart Is Wired, fuzzed out hard rocker Breast Fed, the electrifying The Great Defector, and the ballad, Light Catches Your Face.

Talking Heads / Heaven
I think it’s the lack of sentimentality in what’s actually quite a sentimental song that I really like, a bit like a cat wearily singing about the end of the world. Set in the manic and wiry confines of Fear of Music, it’s a ballad, and the stripped down live version works beautifully on Stop Making Sense. This is Voxtrot’s cover of the song.

Luke Solomon, Freaks

freaks

Freaks was originally the brain child of Bournemouth’s Justin Harris and London based, Luke Solomon. They began recording for Phono, home of Herbert and Swag, and their first few releases, which came in three parts, saw them journey through filter disco (The Shrunken Head), quirky mid tempo house (Journey’s Through Happiness), and minimal techno (The Milwaukee Stance). The guys continue to release Freaks material on their new Music for Freaks imprint. Earlier this year they released a digital version of their single, Boiling Point, featuring remixes from Derrick Carter.

LCD Soundsystem / Get Innocuous
This is a great example of modern dance music that has captured the past so well for me. The beats are reminiscent of Carl Craig’s Paperclip People records and vocals that owe a great deal to David Bowie. It made me like LCD in a very different way, and it made realize that they meant business.
